Is IPTV for Me?

IPTV is a another way of getting Live TV Channels onto your media devices, the same as the standard Cable or Satellite TV Providers.

IPTV uses internet technology to stream live TV Channels to your home. You need a device to receive and process the IPTV signal and then display it on your screen. When you have a traditional source for TV, you require a converter box at each TV. When you want to view IPTV you also need a device to process the channel information. In the case of IPTV, the device you need can be any of the following devices:

  • Adroid TV Box (there are hundreds in the market to choose)
  • Amazon Fire Stick
  • Amazon Fire TV
  • Roku Player
  • Newer XBoxes and PS3 and PS4 Stations
  • Laptop Computer (Windows, Apple, Android)
  • Desktop Computer (Windows, Apple, Android)
  • Smart Phone (Android, iOS)

In today’s technology, these are all just computers, that can be use to do a multitude of things, one of which is to receive and process the data being sent by an IPTV service. Once the data is processed, it is displayed on a screen.

In the case of Smart Phone, the screen is part of the unit itself. You can watch the program directly on the little screen, or you can transmit the screen to your TV Screen in a number of different way:

  • You would need to to install an IPTV application on the smart phone to receive and process the data as it is being received.
  • You can purchase an USB to HDMI converter and then connect the phone directly to the HDMI port on your TV.
  • You can purchase a device such as Google Chromecast, which is plugged into the HDMI port on the TV. This will allow you to transmit the screen display from your phone, directly to your TV Screen.

In the case of Laptop and Desktop computers:

  • You would need to install an IPTV application onto your computer to process the data as it is being received.
  • The latest models laptops and computers have HDMI ports, so that you can connect them directly to the HDMI port on your TV’s.
  • An number of applications have the capability of transmitting the information to a Chromecast device the same as a Smart phone.

All the other devices mentioned above are just small computers that are hooked directly to your TV through an HDMI cable. You will need to install an IPTV application on the device to process the data as it is being received and then sent to the TV Screen.

Can I use my existing phone to replace my TV Converter Boxes

If you already own a good high quality phone, and you don’t want to spend much money.

You can watch the TV Channel on the little screen, or you can then transmit the screen to your TV Screen in a number of different way:

  • You would need to to install an IPTV application on the smart phone to receive and process the data as it is being received.
  • You can purchase an USB to HDMI converter and then connect the phone directly to the HDMI port on your TV.
  • You can purchase a device such as Google Chromecast, which is plugged into the HDMI port on the TV. This will allow you to transmit the screen display from your phone, directly to your TV Screen.

You can a Google Chromecast for as little as $35US($45Cdn).

A chrome cast device plugs into the HDMI port on your TV, and allows you to connect wirelessly using your phone. You can then transfer the display from your phone directly on to the TV’s screen. There are other brand for less money, such as AnyCast, MiraScreen to mention a couple.

You would need to install an application on your phone to download and process the IPTV Data. There are a number of free IPTV applications that you can download and install on your phone. The free version have ad’s on them, that can be annoying, but once you find the application you like, you can usually purchase the full verions for just a few dollars, without the ads and usually with a number of new features not available on the free version.

Check out the FAQ section of information and instruction on installing different IPTV applications on different devices.

Why would I buy an Android Box?

An android box is a standalone computer running the Google Android operating system. It functions much like a android phone, but without a screen. It needs to be hooked up via a HDMI cable to the back of the TV.

It can connect to the internet via WIFI or through a network cable. WIFI can be slow, so if you can connect it directly with a network cable, you will guarantee better network performance.

Again, much like a phone, you would need to install an application onto the Android box to download and process the IPTV data to display on the TV Screen. There are lots of free applications that you can download and try out (with ads) and then purchase the one you like for as little as a couple of dollars.

Which Android Box should I buy?

That depends on what you want to use it for. An adroid box can be used for much more then a standard TV Converter box. By the way it is a computer!! You can browse the web, watch Youtube, play video games, watch the latest movies on demand, Skype, Video Chat, and the list goes on.

What you want to do with the Android box will determine the type, model and specifications of the device you want to purchase.

It’s all about the following specs:

  • CPU processor (the faster and more CPU Cores the better). One of the fastest processors is a S912 Octa(8) Core.
  • Memory (if you plan on running multiple applicatons, you should be looking for 3 or 4Mbs of memory. Don’t settle for less then 2Mb)
  • Storage, this is where all the applications are stored, the data and setup information as well as cache memory(used to buffer the information and make thing run faster). Again the more you want to use the device for, the more memory you need. Don’t settle for less then 8Mb, and 32Mb is sufficient for most needs, but can go up to 64Mb.
  • Internet connecti;on. These devices all come with wired and wifi connections. But not all are equal. Wired connections can be 100Mbps or 1000Mbps. Wifi can be 2.4 or 5 GHz. In both cases the faster the better.
  • Android operating system. Google android is currently out in version 9.0 Pie. You should be looking for a device with at least version 7.1 Nougat or 8.1 Oreo.
  • USB ports, two are perferred, more is better. USB 2.0 is ok, USB 3.0 is better.

An android box can cost you as little as $35, an average for a decent one will be between $80 and $100. While the top of the line will could be over $200.

This is an example of the type of android box that will allow you to do most of the applications you would want to use.

If you plan on using the android device for multiple task, it would be a good idea to also purchase a wireless mini BACKLIT keyboard. Why backlit – so you can see what you are doing in the dark.
